Ballyspellane Brooch.

This is a replica of a 9th century zoomorphic pennanular brooch in the La Tène style.     Found at Ballyspellane, County kilkenny it is now on display at the National Museum of Ireland..    It is a wonderful  example of Celtic work revealing the biting jaws of a beast at each corner to give protection to the wearer.  The reverse of the brooch is inscribed with Irish names, thought to be previous owners of the brooch.   Diameter  Size approx. 1 and 3/4″ (45mm ).
